How often should you service your vehicle?
First of all, if you suspect there is something not right with your car, bring it into us at Roskill Auto Mechanical to have it checked out.
Some common concerns that may mean your car needs a service:
- unusual noises when you start the engine or while driving
- the brakes aren’t responding as quickly as they should be
- your tyres aren’t gripping the road properly
- the engine is revving too high
- the temperature gauge is excessively high
- there is smoke coming from the exhaust
- the steering doesn’t feel right, or your car is pulling to one side
These are just some of the common things you may notice that indicate that your car needs a service. There are several other factors that may mean you need to bring your car in for a service. It’s important to pay attention to any sounds, sights or smells that seem unusual. If you continue to drive around in a vehicle that has a problem developing, you’ll do more damage that may be unsafe and may lead to more expensive repairs.
Don’t hesitate to give us a call to enquire about anything you’re unsure about. Our job is to keep you safe on the road and we’re here to help.
But don’t wait until something goes wrong. All vehicles need to be serviced regularly to maximise safety and operating efficiency.
If there seems to be nothing wrong, how often should you service your car?
When you ask a panel beater or mechanic for their advice on how often you should service your car, you may get the answer, “it depends”. It does depend on a few factors:
- the condition of your vehicle
- the driving history of your vehicle
- how much you drive (how often and how many kilometres per year)
- the age of your vehicle
Service appointments for newer vehicles
If your car is less than four years old, most mechanics consider it to still be quite new. We usually find that once a year is best for your service appointments for a newer model.
Regular checks of your car’s key components (tyres, windscreen, engine, brakes, electrics, etc.) and its fluid levels (brakes, cooling, hydraulics, etc.) once a year will help keep you safe on the road.
This is often exactly what you need if you’re considered a “regular” user/driver. This is often exactly what you need If you are a more frequent driver; however, you may need more frequent servicing. There is no exact number here, but if you’re driving more than 20,000 to 25,000 kms per year, we usually recommend you have servicing more than once a year.

Service appointments for older cars
If your car is more than four years old, we may recommend servicing more frequently than once a year. Again, this depends on the vehicle’s condition, whether you have been its only driver, and you have records of the servicing history, and how much you drive.
Many mechanics use a four-year rule of thumb when referring to a vehicle as “new” or not because that is the threshold when some parts need repairing or replacing. We also take into consideration here the annual use. If you’re not using your car every day and you don’t use it for road trips, you may drive less than 12,000 kms per year. A service appointment once a year for an older vehicle may be enough in this instance.

If you are consistent with your service appointments, your car will be in better condition, safer, and hold its value. Remember, even if you don’t drive much and your vehicle is in excellent condition, it pays to have it checked over regularly.
